The Kirinyaga region, nestled in the heart of central Kenya, is home to some of the world’s most prized coffee. This area lies at the base of Mount Kenya, whose fertile volcanic soils, high altitudes, and cool climate provide ideal growing conditions for coffee. Here, around 1,800 smallholder farmers tend to their coffee crops, cultivating beans with care and expertise that have been passed down through generations.

At the heart of this community is the Kainamui Washing Station, a cooperative that serves these farmers. The station plays a vital role in ensuring the quality of the coffee by meticulously sorting and grading the cherries. They separate the finest selections into microlots, highlighting the unique characteristics of each batch. One of the rarest and most sought-after beans processed here is the Peaberry, often referred to simply as "PB."

Unlike most coffee beans, which develop as two flat seeds inside the cherry, the Peaberry is a natural mutation where only a single, more rounded seed forms. This occurs in just about 5% of the world’s coffee cherries, making it a unique and treasured find. The Peaberry's shape allows it to roast more evenly, creating a flavor profile that's often brighter and more vibrant than its counterparts. This distinct bean is a true reflection of the rich, complex ecosystem and the meticulous craft of the farmers in Kirinyaga.
